THE FOUNDERS

Joyce Chen

CO-OWNER & CO-FOUNDER

The beauty of human body movement brought Joyce to the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® . After being introduced to Pilates in 2001, she received her certification from A Body of Work’s Integrated Teacher Training Program in 2004. Following her passion to expand her knowledge in additional movement modalities, she began studying the GYROTONIC® method with Debra Rose and has trained extensively with Kathy Van Patten and Tamara Yoneda on GYROTONIC® Level II and all Specialized Equipment, as well as GYROTONIC® Specialized Courses and GYROKINESIS®. She is also a GYROTONIC® Pre-Trainer.

Joyce is dedicated to helping her clients deepen their connection to their bodies and find joy in moving with increased flexibility, strength, balance, and mobility. Along with Charley, she is devoted to creating a teaching and learning sanctuary for an incredible community of clients, students, and teachers.

Charley Aldred

CO-OWNER & CO-FOUNDER

Charley has been a student of the GYROTONIC® Method for over 20 years. She began studying the method in 2001 in Miami with renowned GYROTONIC® Teacher, Geta Constantinescu. She credits the health and longevity of her 13-year ballet career with the Miami City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet to her GYROTONIC® practice.

Upon retiring from San Francisco Ballet in 2013, Charley devoted herself to teaching full time. She loves this work because it affects us on a cellular level and she is constantly amazed at the intelligence and infinite potential of the method. She seeks to empower clients on their inward journey through breath and understanding their anatomy to connect with their bodies in a joyous state. She and Joyce opened The Seed Center in 2015 to create a GYROTONIC® sanctuary where students and teachers inspire one another, support one another, and work together towards a goal of health, balance, and resilience.

Charley is currently a GYROTONIC® Master Trainer Apprentice and is a GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Pre-Trainer. She is certified in all the GYROTONIC® Specialized Equipment and in many of the GYROTONIC® Applications Courses. She has studied intensely with Specialized Master Trainer, Kathy Van Patten.  She is also a certified ZENA ROMMETT Floor-Barre teacher and a Franklin Method Pelvic Floor Teacher.

Tara McArthur

Tara’s love of dance and yoga drew her to the GYROTONIC® Method as she sought to more deeply understand and heal her body after a rigorous period in her dance career. The greater awareness, strength, and mobility she felt provided her a broader range of expression in her dancing and eased chronic and overuse injuries.

She met master trainer Nora Heiber in her hometown of Nevada City, CA, and became a certified trainer in 2015.  Upon moving to San Francisco she joined the Seed Center team and found herself surrounded by warm, dedicated, and inspiring teachers and clients.

Tara aims to support people in finding more freedom and empowerment in their bodies. Perpetually a student, she finds fulfillment in continuing to study under a constellation of master trainers and teachers, and to move in community with others. Tara holds a BFA in Dance from California State University Long Beach, as well as a 200hr yoga certification, and continues to perform as a freelance dance artist.

Doing Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis has made a huge difference in my back - it helped me recover from back pain and has kept me pain-free for years. The teachers at the studio are wonderful, the space is beautiful and the movement is restorative and energizing. I can’t recommend it highly enough!
